100 Years!

Celebrating 100 Years of God's Faithfulness

On Thursday 16th November 1905, an invitation was issued to the people of Greystones to come to the opening of Ebenezer Hall, a place where the love of God and the power of God would be preached throughout the war years that followed and for many years to come, right up to this present day.

How did it all begin? Going a bit futher back in time to the late 1800's to a little cottage near Greystones harbour, you would find a small group of men and women, passionate about God, and meeting regularly to pray that He would come with a fresh touch of His presence to bless everyone living in this part of the county. It led to the acquiring of a plot of land on Hillside road, and the building of a hall to seat 200 . . . "built by the people themselves, through gifts of money, building materials, sand and stones, and horses and carts to carry it all." It was completed in five months, and officially opened in November 1905.

Another quote from that time will bring a smile to your face when you think of the town of Greystones today. A visitor in the early 1900's was heard to remark, "There is little or nothing doing here; no fishing worth noticing, though the poor people are straining their eyes watching for signs of mackerel . . . hitherto watching in vain."

A well known Greystones name still links us to those days, Alexander Buckley, founding member of Ebenezer Hall and father of Ross, who had his veterinary practice in the main street, and Joan who ran a private school in Church Road for many years, with many past pupils still keeping in touch.

The name Ebenezer Hall--based on the Bible verse 1 Samuel 7:12: "Thus far has the Lord helped us."--was changed to Hillside Evangelical Church prior to a more modern church building being established on the same site in 1984. This year in November 2005 we celebrate the good foundation laid so long ago by godly men and women and continue to take our place in the wider community of this bustling and fast growing town on Ireland's east coast.
